Time to Get a Promotion
I experienced working very well in a company once, for 5 whole years, without getting a single promotion. I was the earliest, the busiest and the smartest of all, but I always wondered why others newer than me were getting the upgrades instead. I later on realized that there were a number of essential habits I had to instill to let others appreciate me more, especially my bosses. Here are some tips that made me successful.
1. Building the Network
I realize it is very important to create a network of friends in the office as soon as you enter for your first day of work. Learn how to revereothers’ space and capabilities, even if you know you’re a whole lot better than they are. I made it a habit to give out desk business card holders to my colleagues, including the new ones. This gave me an easier time moving into the environment and feel more welcome.
The network should also include your clients and bosses. Satisfied clients can help you seem more visible to your bosses. Make sure you ask for feedback after every successful transaction. If your colleagues are pleased with you, they will also be more than willing to recommend you for a promotion. Build upstrong ties and learn how to work with the team.
2. Excellence and Competence
As the saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” Promotions always compriseof hard work, discipline and dedication. You will be ready in taking on more challenges and bigger assignments in the future by reviewing and studying. Become an expert in your field by reading more books and surfing the internet. Do more work than assigned. I remember being the last one leaving the office to do more research than asked. I’d eat lunch in my cubicle just holding a Leather fanny pack while others would go down to the cafeteria. It was tedious at first, but I developed the habit and it definitely paid off in dividends.
3. Pleasing the Bosses
Get to know your bosses better without looking like you’re desperate for a raise or promotion. At first, volunteer to join a team or be more than willing to do small tasks that seem to be very unnoticeable. Doing the little things very well are great ways that will make you look like an effective team player. You get to be nearerto your boss without being too abrasive to other co-workers who are also working for the same position. Should you give presents, do it only on special occasions and keep the gift simple. I personally find a townsend pen ideal for the situation.
4. Stay Updated
Always know what’s going on in the office. Assess your weak and strong points then learn how to improve on your shortcomings. Learn how to deal with workplace changes and always be prepared to do some things that might bore you. In some cases, I discovered my boss was only testing me if I did researchand updates independently. When I did, he gave me a promotion!
