The teachings on the four noble truths are among the very
first of many teachings that Shakyamuni Buddha gave in Sarnath
(near Benares or Varanasi in North-East India), seven weeks
after attaining enlightenment in Bodhgaya. These teachings
are known to contain the essence of the Buddhist path, regardless
of the tradition one follows.
The Four Noble Truths (Pali, "cattari ariya saccani") are
taught in Buddhism as the fundamental insight or enlightenment
of Sakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha), which led to
the formulation of the Buddhist philosophy.
- Dukkha: There is suffering. Suffering is an intrinsic
part of life also experienced as disatisfaction, discontent,
unhappiness, impermanence.
- Samudaya: The causes of suffering, which is attachment
and desire (tanha).
- Nirodha: There is a way out of suffering, which is to
eliminate attachment and desire. Nirvana is peace.
- Marga: The trues path that leads out
of suffering is called the Noble Eightfold Path.
This outline form is exactly that used by doctors of the
Buddha's culture when diagnosing and prescribing for a disease:
identify the disease, its cause, whether it is curable, and
the prescribed cure. Thus the Buddha treats suffering as a
"disease" we can confidently expect to cure. In essense these
are the four noble truths of buddhism.
Because of its focus on suffering, Buddhism is often called
pessimistic. But since Gautama Buddha presented a curewith
the 4 noble truths, Buddhists consider it neither pessimistic
nor optimistic but realistic.
The Four Noble Truths of Buddhism was the very first sermon
given by the Buddha after few weeks of his enlightenment (achieved
after many
years of meditation). He gave this important sermon to
the ascetics with whom he had practiced austerities for many
years.
Shakyamuni Buddha explained that one can use the Four Yardsticks
to assess if one is practising the correct way: one should
feel happiness, compassion, love and joyous effort when practising.
The Four Noble Truths — Ven. Ajahn Sumedho.
The Four Noble Truths are the central Teaching of the Buddha.
This booklet was compiled and edited from talks given by Venerable
Ajahn Sumedho on the teaching of the Buddha: that the unhappiness
of humanity can be overcome through spiritual means. The teaching
is conveyed through the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths, first
expounded in 528 BC in the Deer Park at Sarnath near Varanasi
and kept alive in the Buddhist world ever since.
